The Kruittoren was erected around 1425 as part of Nijmegen's medieval defensive ring. Inside its thick walls the city stored gunpowder, kept at a safe distance from the built-up town centre. The tower is a rare surviving example of early fortification designed for the age of cannon.
Round towers arrived with gunpowder artillery: a circular profile has no vulnerable corners and deflects cannon fire far better than flat walls. The Kruittoren's almost circular ground plan is a textbook example of this design logic.
In 1874 the Vestingwet stripped Nijmegen of its fortress status, and the ramparts were scheduled for demolition. Around the surviving masonry a public park was laid out, which preserved the Kruittoren. Architect Pierre Cuypers restored the tower in 1878–1883. Today the monument stands in a freely accessible park.
